Anise for Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Anise may improve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome

A 2016 study found that anise oil significantly improved symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) compared to placebo or peppermint oil over 4 weeks. Symptoms of IBS included abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, constipation severity, gastroesophageal reflux, headache and quality of life. Anise may also help treat depression associated with IBS. Anise is an approved herb by the German Commission E. Some people may experience digestive or other side effects.
