Valerian Root May Improve Insomnia and Anxiety
A 2024 study found that Valerian extract significantly improved subjective sleep quality, measured sleep latency and sleep efficiency, and subjective anxiety after 56 days compared to placebo. Total sleep time also improved as measured by polysomnography. Valerian has been used with apparent safety for up to 6 weeks in doses of 300-600 milligrams daily. Valerian may cause headache, stomach upset or other side effects. Withdrawal symptoms are possible with prolonged use. Insomnia is complex and it’s always important to address the underlying cause.
