Licorice Root for Heartburn
A 2025 study found that an extract of deglycyrrhizinated licorice root was significantly more effective than placebo at treating symptoms of acid reflux or heartburn over 4 weeks. Licorice contains glycyrrhizin (glycyrrhizic acid), which can cause serious electrolyte imbalances if consumed in large amounts or for long periods of time. Licorice is unsafe for use during pregnancy.
